in flocks near house. We saw many flichers, as many as 7
at once, along road while walking. Sra. Peredo said many
were in around garden now; Lynn had seen one carrying a
flicher. Sra. P. also said many Curiá now where grass is
thick. She said some were at ranch. Lynn had seen one
near house. Sra. P. said Turanetis occurred in higher
parts; about February, sometimes landed in groups,
sometimes falling over as if drunk. Lynn thinks Sra. P. is
good observer. Apparently the government will soon take
nearly all of the ranch (for agrarian reform small farms)
and the vecinas (about 1000). Threatened rain today.
22 June 1970. A pair of large Butos in eucalyptus near garden,
perhaps nesting. White head, gray body, white tail, w. black
band near tip and terminal narrow white band. One (♀?)
with grayish breast. Many Curia dropping on grain short
vegetation near walls near houses. We all went to Juliaía about
60 mi., to get oranges and do errands. We stocked up on groceries
and supplies. Sra. P. has regular room at Hotel B.-fair meals there at
35.
Then to Puno - looked at shotguns - $100 for a light Italian
single 16 ga. ! The said to be illegal, struck super sold me ammo - 105
solen. for lots of 16 ga., no. 6 shot! Car repair in Juliaía. Then
back to Colocola her ranch. Clean all day.

23 June 1970. Felt clouds - strong sun, mod. wind. One of the
Buto's near home carried dangling object (snake or lizard?) in
bill while flying. We drove to the Bosque (guinea bushes)
ear clear stream), about 1 km. N. of house, & I do see
most of her hummingbirds there. Thick grass area included
