Journal 19 June 1970 Lima, Peru. of Plaza del Mercado y Jr. de los Balces. Cailloma + Ruffini Torres. With both, 200 soles a night - large but minimal room. We met Manuel Poye and wife Isabel in evening. He told us that 3 children, O'Neil, Terlough, & Welsh, were at Neda. Luisiana (Mr. Espinosa) would be soon. 20 June 1970. To airport via taxi ($5 soles) and took Faucett flight to Arequipa, about 1 hour, passing close by Coropuna and other peaks w/ snow. Little snow at top Misti. Arranged to take car at 02:00 for Juliaca (Company Victoria, about 6 hour trip, 207 soles, good cars, co. located in San Juan de Dios, a couple of blocks from main plaza). Took room at Hotel Turistas - $1.40 w/ private bath, all clean + quiet. 21 June 1970. Car came for us at 01:45. Picked up others. Then drove to Juliaca. Coffee at Solitario (2 soles). Key winshield going over summit region, over 13,000'. Nearing Juliaca, we passed 2 fair sized lakes, one w/ many weed islands, apparently next site of giant coat. Juliaca about 08:15. We looked for message at Hotel Banister, on main plaza - none. So left our luggage there and started for Colacala. First took a colectivo toward J. Huamane (15 soles) to Pucara Road. Hiked this road about 2 1/2 miles before a truck came - this took us about 8 mi. to Colacala road. Then walked up this road 11 miles to the Hacienda, where grad student Lynn Carpenter staying w/ Mrs. Emma Salinas (de) de Paredes while studying Ornithochilus hummeringbird.
