C. Koford 1970 Journal 17 June 1970 Mr. Quito, Prov. Pichincha, Ecuador. Many traps in this drawer. We returned to Quito, arriving about 1430. Put up mice. Visited Fernando at lab again. Overcast today, no neblina visible. 18 June 1970. Departed Florida 0600, arrived trap site 0700. The 24 live and 11 snap traps held only 2 drysanga (snap traps), but are still looked suitable for Phyllostis. Some Tillandsia on rocks, clumps grass, ferns, pro carton, shrubs, but all about 1 ft. max height, goat-browser. We returned to lab. Put up mice. Processed chironomus in 4 drysanga, w. poor spreads. We gave 20 live + 12 snap traps to Fernando Ortiz, and solicited cooperation of him and his assistant, Pancho León, in getting Phyllostis alive. Ortiz said Dryosanga taken recently on NW side of Mt. Pichincha, by a local collector (Güemes trip). Completed packing for departure. Our boxes: Florida, about 2 blocks E of Versalle, 3 & of Av. América, on Calle Santiago, about 3 blocks W. of Parque de Mayo. 120 sueros ($6) per day, w. fairly good meals. No rain today, but overcast. August said to be driest month. 19 June 1970. To airport to take 0820 plane to Lima. About 3/4 cloudy. Plane (Boeing) late; departed about 0945. Cloudy, so saw only part of Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. More broken cover over Peru; we flew directly over jungles + saw mud slide covering it (photos). Then on over Cordillera Negra and S. over coast side under to Lima. Dense Exchange 43, + sole/dollar. Overcast, dense, thin. Curious customs inspection, drove about 12:15. About 2:30 we went to Banco, storehouse. To reach it, go out Faucett toward Lima until hit Argentina; then must go about 10 blocks toward Colloa to warehouse, on N side. Our coffin box was almost alone in a wire-sided room. Contents damp, moldy, rusty. We got supply of live traps, snap traps, and a few other items. They gave us a box and string. Then we took a taxi to Lima and stayed at Hotel del Sol, roughly 8 blocks S.
