15 June 1970 Quito, Ecuador
Fernando and "Bando" León for the hills - first N. on road to radio station then W. through a meunlarization and into a dirt road, paved with rough stones or wheel tracks. This road went up through eucal-lyptus groves, ascending rapidly, to a gravel yard (Mi Cielo), then smoother with gates (where you were supposed to donate 5/20 for road repairs), past 4 separate TV towers, to a large flat turnout on a ridge (good view - mountains and city). This trip was about 12 kms. from foot of rough road, 20-20 from university. Tower 3 and 4 about 3600 and 3700 ft. elev., end of road 3770 (by altimeter). Arrived about 1530, 50 min. from uni... gate was 9 kms. before road end. Upper parts road through like grassland, thick & ungrazed. Bushes along road (Fernando knew many), and a few large native trees. We saw a Sylviogulor, Beitaro, big Turdo Drallaria along road. Fernando said Carolester had been taken too.
Top of road on a ridge in ecker, but some small 5- footy cliffs on ridge and higher ones about 1 mile W. We set 41 live traps and 12 snap traps on the steep slope, mostly nearly all by rocks but near bushes and thick grass. Almost no bare ground - shot moss or fernage cover by rocks. As found apparent Sylviogulor droppings in grass long some rods. Bait was a mixture of oats, barley, wheat, + seeds! We departed from top and returned to Quito, where we had coffee w/ Fernando & wife. Supper & lodging at La Florida.
16 June 1970. Borrowed the jeep and departed 0730 for trap area. It had rained last night and continued, gradually lifting. The found 2 orange - bellied brown-black backed catterpies on road (not collected). [Frogs] Road up mountain was bad in upper parts - we had to walk around at some turns. Rain stopped about 9:15 when we were on top. Our 12 snap traps held 2 frogamps?, taken among loose brush and grass near rocks. Two Live traps took only one
