work. We talked w/ one boy who was going to study Callinice in Colombia. About 3 p.m. took launch back to Frijole, then train (2nd class, 40$) to Panama. Stayed at hotel.
TO Quito, Ecuador
15 June 1970 To airport via taxi ($5) to take C. Ecuadoriana A. flight at 0530 to Quito (turbo prop). Stopped at Cali about 1/2 hr. This site given a tropical flat land, but mountain on skyline. Very clean compared to Panama. Then on to over beautiful Andes. Plane passed over Lago Cuicocha (near Otocachi), which has 2 islands in lake (Fernando Ortiz - C. has been there). Snow-capped peaks visible from Quito (2930m.) - Pichincha just to north (4698m.), Atacazo, Corazon, & Illinizas to S. & W. Currency exchange clerk - wonderful clean air, clear day, clean city. Fernando Ortiz - Cuyo (Univ. Catolica Biologica) met us & installed us at Pension Florida (Calle Santiago), a couple of blocks N. of Parque de Mayo.
Then we visited his lab, where he had centrifuges, refrigerta, microscopes, various equipment (he has done chromosome preparation work for Prof O. Bernard at Berkeley). Also there was Francisco Leon, a field assistant, whom I had met on the 1964 Bolopogor trip - Fernando said he was energetic, could put up shins, set traps, etc. Both will accompany us up the zigzag road to near the television tower, where we hope to trap tonight. Bought bait. / at a red-hot palm flower we saw a hummingbird (Lesbia victoriae sp?), which perched and thrust bill up into flowers. Fernando had a few hummers in a greenhouse with plants, too, & some legumes from Cuicocha and a small brocket deer (it shed its antlers about November). There have been riots - student leader killed, press bombed - at the state univ. eristy as many police in that area. / About 2:40 p.m we departed.
