C. Koford 1 Journal (Berkeley to Peru) 13 June 1970 (with Bob Eise, 14 years old, as assistant) Berkeley to Panama Drove to San Francisco airport and took Panamanian flight 515 to Panama. Stayed in Hotel International near Canal Zone ($12 for 2). En route we flew over upper Baja California and had fine views of its coast and deserts, then over the Gulf and Durango, passing close to Mexico City. On to Guatemala, where we made rough descent through clouds. About 1 hr. at airport, then on to Tuxpan. $2 ea. by limousine to city. 14 June 1970 Sunday Canal Zone, Panama We took 7 a.m. train at Pedroza station (first class, 70ยข) for Frijolera. Canal Zone little changed from 1957 appearance. At Friolera we took the waiting launch (Snook) for Barra Colorado. Decided we liked to Van T'gore Big Tree, then to Big Trees near AMA 9. Saw 3rd tree squirrel near start of Barlow Trail. Saw 2 howler w. small infant (1-2 yrs. old?). Saw about 4 yps. of howlers and heard others; they seemed more numerous than in 1957. Some ate green figs & dropped many to ground below. We flushed a King Vulture from a howler carcass on trail near WMW II. Many yellow black- orange palm fruits under palms, & much evidence of eating there (by agoutis? cotuis?). We saw no cotui or tayras, but did see an aguti. We first heard sliding sounds - I thought it might be a manakin dis- playing - then saw it on ground. We also found its trochi agouti in muddy trails. Other trails were small clover leaf - pazana? We saw groups of small tayras w. red rumps; many whistling calls from them. Also large tayra w. yellow breast. On trunk of Van Tyne tree, saw 2 Saceptorys bats, one with an infant - when alarmed, adult moved a few inches & left infant clinging to trunk. We also saw one group of capuchin monkeys & heard their calls. It did not rain dur- ing our stay on BCI. Few people about & little sign of current scientific
