C. Koford Journal 13 September 1969 Paracas Penn., Dept. Ica, Peru. about half as many carcasses in sand - all rather old, probably several months. In addition many flippers, apparently cut off. All lying in sand along 1/2 mile of beach. Eventually a turtle dug a break at some point. Apparently must take a side-winded turn. Many penguin colonies, turtles, other shore birds. A few seals. One huge flock 500+ cormorants in a fogged formation (all black). I found fairly fresh remains of booby fish or sooty tern parts, charred vertically including very living, white larva wing at base rest- We picked up various shells on beach; most to be left in Lima until an appropriate vessel ship if desired. Boat gear ready for leaving. Clear sky about noon and thereafter pleasant, w. wind about 10 kts. from SW. We saw up to 50 terns flying over shore, but no cormorants. Drove N. and camped near Lima 80 south of Lima. 14 Sept. 1969. Repacked gear and drove to Lima. Visited Manuel Blanco. Left car at parking lot. Went to airport and departed in evening for San Francisco. 15 Sept. 1969. Arrived Los Angeles went thru customs w. no problems. Continued to San Francisco and Berkeley + End of Peru 1969 trip.
