18 September 1969 Pampa Calera, Dpto. Ayacuch, Peru
sand and near stream, or of large free-ranging rat. I put traps on sand near stream
where some mouse footprints. I shot one mice which ran near me, but saw no
others. Also I shot a flycatcher and a Cincloka. About 5 p.m. we saw a pair of Aplom-
ado Falcons land in our shot gun and took, or if feeding (2 specimens). Overcast
and spooked about 6 p.m. We stayed at headquarters hut.
19 September 1969. Moderate breeze night, but no frost. My traps held
3 P. larvini, 1 Abdominivorus. Clear morning; wind about 10 kts. Other toka
P. larvini, and M.L. a short-tailed mouse. We drove on down to Nazca, about
54 mi. from summit (measured road ascending) to repoba, get time, lubricator, and
so on. Also visited w. Mrs. W. Franklin (nee Burns, El Segundo, Calif.). Boss promised
dog carpets for yesterday was half finished, but day after he finished, a rather
rough job but usable (for strings except in Lima). Then we drove south
in dark to about km 295, in desert south of sea.
13 September 1969. Foggy morning. We drove on to Hotel Paracas, arriving
0730 a.m. (turn off Panamericana near km 250 at fertilizer plant; journal).

Takahiro manages, who knew Phil Ashmole, Joy Schuhle, Jim Fowler, etc. A carder mount-
ed in box had been taken by Fowler. Mrs. showed an article in Life or Parade July
28, 1969. He said Loguilla a good place to see carders. We drove down Taguas
Drinks road about a mile, then to a bay to south, w. long sand beach. On
this I found many remains of sea lions, pelicans, cormorants, and other such,
including a green (?) turtle. Fishermen said only occasional carder there, but
many about 14 hrs. to s. on road. We then went to Loguilla beach, which
we had visited about a week ago. Again found many carcasses of sea lions in
various stages of decay, including pups. I found 3 fox popper skulls, and
many paws over. Found about 5 penguins, some dried, one fairly fresh. Also
Puffinus spp.
shorewater, gulls, pelicans, cormorant remains. Most impressive was the
remains of Lestry - locked turtle! I found 28 dried heads, and saw
