8 September 1969.
Pampa Caleras, Dpto. Ayacuchos, Peru.
the 3 of us tramped slopes in area and flushed one, which flopped and said
200 yds. downslope and landed in ditch at bottom. We were unable
to flush it again. We continued on down thru roads to area of supposed
Inca works, Incahuasi, where there were stone walls, and woto in
mule bottom. This about 1 mile from Sanctis. We set traps. I put 30
snap traps near rock walls, boulders, and bunch grass (rare
brush) on S. slope. Ray searched tall grass for Nuthatches but
saw none. We saw 6 Thiseone at one site. M. saw a bird in
mule pond, & I shot it (spec.). Cold cleared night. I saw one
djard today and M&L collected one.
[Incahuasi]
9 September 1969. Frosty morning. Much calling of Thiseone at dawn, and
some at night, but heard no tinamous. My traps held 6 Phyllostis pictus,
1 P. bolivianus. M&L took 2 of latter, 8 pictus. I shot a hummingbird (spec.)
on boulder among thick grass. Near stream in fine saw spots, I
saw apparent treader of small mouse (P. sublimine?). We saw a P. Boliv-
ianus run to rock wall about 8 am, but 40 live traps set for about 3 hrs. this -
after took none. We put up specimen, then drove 4 mile farther on road (seita
about 30 km.), to wien area mostly low tala. Searched, but found no tinamous
there. Then returned to tala zone where we had seen Tinamotis, but 3 of us search-
ing about 2 hours found none. Then back to headquarters, talked w/ personnel,
and on 2 miles to summit, then down slightly 3 mi. to rough rock and brush
canyon, where we set traps. I set 80 snap traps in rocks near brush.
Overcast afternoon, warmer than yesterday, but wind came up about 7 p.m.
and continued as into night.
10 September 1969. Frostier morning. Checked traps. I had 1 Nutomyz, 1 Phyllostis bol-
ivianus, 5 Phyllostis darwini. M&L put up some of these. We reset traps; I set
30 snaps. We were mystified by 10 x 3 mm. droppings scattered on trails.
