C. Koford 27 Journal 1 September 1969 To Pampa Galeras, Dpto. Ayacucho, Peru. from Nazca), when we saw groups of vicuñá, and a little further on saw llamas and the buildings of the vicuña preserve. We talked w/ them there, who said latest census gave about 1100 vicuñá in preserve (6000 hectárea) and about 1700 outside. Also there were llamas, alpacas, cattle, and a number of Indian family dwellings, (also pigs loose around headquarters). They said there were 3 llamas (Tiranamete) on hill to S. of Lagota, & many about 4 km. to SW where were llamas. They had a map showing location of vicuña colonies too. We tried to camp near buildings, but dogs and pigs became agressive. So we drove 6 miles toward Piquio, to avoid border of preserve, & camped 1/2 mile S. near buildings, grass, shrubs, and a few guenqa trees. We set traps; I set 31 snap traps and 3 steel traps. Most near low cliffs and guenoa. I shot a Upucerubia in rodin (specim). Saw no lagijas. Flocking llamas, and some cattle and sheep. Saw no tiramouna or vicuñá. 8 September 1969 Calm night, 2/10 overcast; froze water inside. My snap traps held 2 Phyllotis pictus, 2 Colongas, and 3 Abrota bolivianus (dead wt 713g, & 14 g, young). I other caught 0. Steel traps, no results. I shot a flycatcher (spec.). ML put up 3 of my mice. Clear morning. We took up traps and drove to headquater (of Islenze Reserve) and visited W. WL Franklin, who showed us some of what he was doing. He had an assistant who watched groups, plotted movements and encounters, from small hut. Study area blocked off into 200 m² squares by painted piles of stones. He also showed me a road, leading SW from our camp of last night, where there were said to be Notthropecta in thick bunchgrass on hillslope, above stream. On way back to highway, on rocky - shot grouse ground about 1/2 mile Saw from lower high table, we flushed two Tiranamete perduldi walking side by side. I shot at them at long range; no effect, then ran after them until they flew uperslope into super tala. Later, about 7 p.m. Galeras- 24 lug. 112 Nazca 186
