C. Koford 26 Journal 4 September 1969. To Nazca, Dept Ica, Peru. We drove on S. through Carute and Chircha to Pisco, and to Parcona and out road a peninsula to Loguillar. Peninsula mostly red pebble desert pavement, w/ no vegetation. Road ended at beach where found number of skeletons and droppings of pelicans, cormorants, shearwaters, sea lion (rocks skull of one). Along shore an occasional dark Cuchulote (spec.), turning weeds aside among wet rocks at water's edge. Sighted several Turkey Vultures and two Condors over beach, on windward side. Good to Sto. Pejerrey: not open to public except Sunday & late afternoon; apparently grunting looking area. We skipped Loguilla Grande and took shortcut to highway (km 250), and headed S. to W. of Des, hills of sand pebbles 500' high, perhaps w/ rocky hillbases. Much flat pebbly desert too! Continued on to Nazca where [to Oficina de Correos, Nazca] we met Mr. Franklin (Utah State Univ grad student), who was then been working on vegetation at Bamba Dolores Vicuña Reserve. He & wife live at Bolgoresi 263, near the Hotel de Trivistan, and he spends 5 days a week at the preserve. Camped on desert nearby: cold wind eve, wet dew at night. 7 September 1969. Car & tent repair, and packed specimens, also jobs, in Nazca. Departed 3:30 p.m. & drove up Peguio road 52 miles, to alt. 10500'. Along road landscape nearly barren, tho occasional cactus & small brush, and many trails of goats, and found a few large flocks of goats. Camp area had remains of grazed shrubs among boulders. We all set snap traps; I set 22 among boulders, rocks wolly, save near brusher. Just before reaching site, R.H. saw a dark "coyote-like" animal run across the road; a guinea? This was small track w/ deep pads at the site. Clear evening among low red-rock cliffs and boulders. No water seen. 7 September 1969. Clean calm dry night. M.L. took 4 mice, R.H 2, and I took 2, all apparently P. darwini. We saw various finches and flycatchers. Departed and drove on 15 miles to highest point, about 12500 ft. (70 mile
