4 September 1969
To Loamas Lachay, Dept. Lima, Peru.
1000 ft.
To Lachay, Km. 89, where hill to level of road (1000) and even lower was pale green. There were 20+ small camps of goats here, + flocks of goats on the green slopes. Then about Km. 110. Area greener than in early August 1, - first such green barren hills we have seen since Trujillo. We went on to Churin road, up at 6.3 mi, + off on track to behind of green lomas, where had camped August 1, and in '67.
Hope to get wiscacha specimen. From this side, green below (including large oxalis) extends more than halfway down slope among cactus and boulders. We set a few (6) steel traps near wiscacha trodden sign, about 3:30 p.m. Personally I saw no fresh droppings, but some apparent trails (they last long in the dust).
Sun burning out, dejado. Foggy clouds 3 p.m.; starling by 6 p.m.
5 September 1969. Tho M. and R. said heard lute in night, not sure can you take now. But M. got a wiscacha in steel trap set under rocks; the animal was dead with part of one hind leg eaten, as if attacked by a fox. We drove to Lima and picked up mail, shopped, visited Towing & Automobile Club to inquire about car loans. Then in evening visited W. Manuel Plenge, 191 Armenteros, Miraflores. He was about 30, works for Sec 5. Peru Copper, and has been extant in Peruvian birds. He is preparing a bibliography of these birds, and has a fair reference collection of books and reprints, including U.S. ornithological journals. He recommended several areas in Dept. Lima for collecting, including Bosque de Piedras on Santa road from Lima (to NE). Also he had fairly completed set of topographical maps. He was willing to ship specimens for us, as he had done for Paynter (?) and Ashmole, and would arrange for us to pack the center lot next to his office (av. Torre 411, 8° floor; Corilla 2649, Lima, 5 Peru Copper Corp.) He lives w. mother in elaborately furnished (much china displayed) house in fairly nice section about 1 block from a small park and the ocean. We drove south on Carretera Panamericana to new Km. 83, Pearson's Tilanderia study area, and camped there.
