La libertad, Peru. 13000 ft.
31 August 1969 To: 10 mi. WNW of Santiago de Chucos, Dpto.,
My snap traps held 4 Phylotis, most or all P. andinum. I put up
5, discarded jaws. ML took 11 mice, including apparent P. mozistis
and some Abadiri bolivianus. Roy got 4 P.a. We put up snares.
I collected 2 leijarse on rocky slope of oat stubble field. Then
drove toward Otuzgo, crossed river just after junction, then
(8 mi. from jot.)
on through Palapampa, 8500'. Much planted eucalyptus ;
hard heavily grazed and planted. Dry aspect; 5 mi. beyond
(Palapampa)
Palapampa, again crossed river - dirty yellow color (mr. law 89 post).
About 7 mi. on, mr. law. 100-105, pasture, patches of brush,
some rock outcrops and walls - prospective complete, and
still eucalyptus (about 10,500). 20 mi. beyond Polle p., again
crossed yellow river. Much sign mining, & extensive mine buildings
about 4 mi. on, at Horay ( Northern Peru Mining, Inc.). We
took branch toward Santiago de Chucos (54 km.), not going on
6 km to Quiricote road wound up through open rolling
graveland wr. few rock outcrops. 7 miles from Horay, we
saw seed snipe, & I shot a Capella & plovers. Also saw frogs
in clear stream. Some Distichlis growing low. Cold, over-
cast, & some hail. 2 miles on to highest point, 13100' by
our altimeter. We camped about 4/2 mile down S de Chucos side &
set traps via boulders and cliffs. Last 22 snap traps..!

About 9 p.m., an Abadiri bolivianus caught. Overcast night, light breeze.
1 September 1969 My traps held 1 Ornyzomyx (open). Others took Colomys,
Phylotis pictus. Saw and heard splithorn near roads, grass low heavily
grazed, mostly 2-3" tall. No frost last night. We drove 4 miles toward Santiago
(R.H. collected a T hirstorum, and we saw others)
de Chucos to high point where we could see many nts. of Cordillera Blanca to S. Most
mountain in distance looked black. Then back toward N about 2 miles, to peak
