To Dr. Pacasmayo, Dpto. Libertad, Peru.
Highway near Moquegua, the S., about 4 mi. S., visited campsite on road to Wicken
R. Hamilton and stayed in Sept. 1967. Appearance unchanged. Surface of sand is
very coarse sand, or tiny pebbles. Many lizard tracks & holes, but hardly any
more lizards seen. We continued on S. and camped about 1/2 mile E. of road
at edge requisite low brushaway bordered by sticking brush fence; same camp
as used July 14, 1967. Vermilion Flycatcher, Mockingbird, & many small birds here,
but mildly. Nest of Sparrow, & of mud, in mesquite; apparently not currently in use
by fernandez. Wind decreased evening. I set 15 snares traps. We put up 3
midnite for lizards. In evening, M+K hunted geckos on rocky bare hills to W. of camp and took 7 of fair size.
30 August 1969. Nets took no bats; 2 birds (M.h.). My 15 snares traps
took 0. Mk got a rat (aygomnis?). We drove on S past San Pedro de
Llora, an area of sand dunes, a road up to mission ruin town in hill, & 5 of
those, in region km 630, many sand lummholes topped w. papers.
Trujillo; Shopping store repair in Trujillo; start of a fiesta
(Berta Rosa?). Then off on good inland toward Huamachuco. Mostly
dirt road from the start. Small towns along the way. Slow we waited
1/2 hr. while group of people, singing, carried image of virgin 1/2 mile
to chapel. Dry canyon - cactus only at first, then Tilanderia, then
shrubs. We went about 40 miles to 4 miles past a small
village, then up a side road (sign said Huascacay 6 km) where
we camped near slopes w. oat fields, boulders, and shrubs.
All set traps. I set 22 snares + 7 live traps by lizards,
rocks. Found nest of Notoprosto under overhanging stone
in patch of brush; egg shells still present, unweathed. We
are 1.6 mi. up Yanachuel - Huascacay road, & junction is 22 mi. below
Ojuzco - Huamachuco jet.
