27 August 1969. Hida, Taulis, Dpt. Cajamarca, PerĂº. only way out was back up the hill (muddy and impassable to see). The people & country pleasant but no forest nearby. After talking around, M. & I decided to hike back to Palmito, about half way to our Taulis camp, as this was lush of only truck in the region (Don Manuel Aguilar, administrator). We hiked back two hours & talked w/ farmer who informed us road to San Miguel very bad, but offered to lend us horses for trip to Palmito town now. We return to our car. Little rain today. No rain at night. 28 August 1969. Overcast morning, slowly clearing. We tried road up slope. Made it about half way after great effort, with help of school boys to put truck in mud, & push car. M went to the ranch to arrange for horses to Palmito; I soon joins her. Ray stayed w/ car - Soon after Mr reached the ranch, Ray arrived in car - 4 young men w/ shovels had helped him over the last mud curve. Road much wider today. We saw an avada coming close. [We drove both toward Florida. Got stuck on a log bridge, but finally on, went Palmito & down to Taulis and to La Florida. The half overcast calm evening. [I picked ripe freshly new - one 29 Aug green ovule on road above our Taulis camp, about 6500'(spec.). 29 August 1969. My 15 snap traps hold 1 min. Phyllostis annieae (spec.). M also got one. Mine near line of arid- loved caper brush. M & R collected a few lizards. Hummingbirds (brownish, white breast) common, as was mockingbird. a large finch sang loudly (not collected). Tracks of large fisted objects; and M and R collected some of smaller spp. Departed about noon and drove to
