24 August 1969
Heda Taulis, Rio San, Opls Cajamarca,
some furniture + people can stay there. Osver (deceased) had 3
species of trees planted for wood, including casuarina. Much else
Cajamarca
planted about 18 years ago. He said road went over mtn. to S., to Cajamar
n Cheper. He also said beans live, & "llover" (small thin puna, not
spotted). Water in small cond N of his San went to Sanja, he said. Us-
ually people bring a little furniture in Lerma, to stay at Heda's (home?).
We each put up a second mist net. Wanted birds, shrewed mice.
Morning partly cloudy, sometimes sunny. In late afternoon we rigged
Two nets near houses at Taulis. Only 2 trucks used road all day.
Rain on & off in afternoon. Tinamou called early morning, evening,
but now more. About 5 p.m. saw a toya (?-mutilated) run across road
[divined]
1/4 mile W of route. I about did my trap held an Alcedo, + a humming-
bird was in mist net (spec.). Dreizzly evening, but calm.
25 August 1969. No rain night, but all over wet by dawn. We had set two
nets near Taulis' houses; but no bird catch this morning. Rare droppings sign
dove of bats around building. Cantekin said that recently a fox, size of dog,
"snice",
had taken two of his turkeys. My 24 traps held: Alcedo (under edge boards),
3 red-brown oryzine w. white belly, 1 gray oryzine. A net along path trail
caught a Desmodus and large hummingbird (CBK +100). I saw a raven-sized
dominant
bird w. black body, much white dusted to half of tail (= hawk?). Sky
still threatening at 11 a.m., no rain yet. Shot an iridescent green-bodied
tanager. I set 17 snap traps, some baited w. mouse meat, near tree
and logs in forest. Set 2 #2 steel traps, 50 yds apart, in area where
saw the "toya" yesterday. Rain on and off from about 2 to 6 p.m.
never very hard. I have 2 nets out; so have M.J. & R.M., also set
10 traps near boulder near pasture near Taulis' buildings, to see
if Phyllosie there. No rain at night.
