23 August 1969.
Up Rio San, Dpto Cajamarca, Peru.
increasingly road, averaged about 5 mph. Watched often at another
of sugarmill. Many small clear streams, & jingly potatoes near
them, between crops and second growth. 7 mi. beyond Fribia,
road neared Rio San - rushing, much white water, 10 yds. wide - and
there were a few flat unpopulated sites for camping. Only .8 mi.
further, however, we arrived at the huge white ramblhouse of
Taulis. It & associated garages, shops, deserted, but 3 girl children
of caretaker in saddle nearby (no adults at all). Decided camped site
near house, but went on .8 miles to where road turned
uphill to 5, & good open grass near trees & streamlet for camp.
No signs of habitation there & view of waterfall of Rio San, as well as
another thin higher are to SE. Overcast & threatening. We set mouse
traps, put up nets in clearing. I set 2 traps along trail leading to
Rio San waterfall. Heard tinamou calls, sol la, 2 notes; could not
see it, though close. Saw two large iridescent green-backed birds, prob-

stand for above general vegetation, showing former cut. Also much area
planted to a peculiar tree w. much dissected leaf, planted in rows, often
w. coffee cluster between: across canyon of San, forest appears to
be recent above our level, about 6000'. Drizzly rain mid-after-
oon, sometimes uncomfortably wet.

& a small one (spec). Net held a Dendrocolap (specimen). At night
we heard frog making noise like two hollow sticks striking together
but were unable to find the animal. M & R got same Abota
only. I reset traps. Talked to "guardian" of Taulis, who was friendly. The
house built about 25 years ago - now in bad repair, the ter
