O. Koford 17 Journal 22 August 1969 Up Rio Sana, Dpto Lambayeque, Peru. mills in flat bottom. Harvesting now. Road skirted green zone, w. rocky desert, canyons above it. Oystein also in green sugar belt; we passed N. of this town, barrow, & took a fork to N., toward Florida and Taulis (after various injuries). Saw two large reservoirs in this low country, bordering rocky deserts. Then road skirted the green low zone, sugar cane, then more reia p[ost]olier. Also bananas, papayas, & later tall [ban]dos grown (& cut) by road. Valley bottom gradually decreased, & thicker than trees in w. hills. Through small settlements such as Pan de Azucar, & Espinal. Adobe & stick buildings. Road me-way, dirt, w. rare turnouts - no place to camp. Pushed on 5 mi. or road beyond El Espinal (Mante [i]no Florida, further up) and [I in Dpto. Cajamarca] camped by roadside rocky hills, trees to 50' feetone of bromeliads, rushing water, tall bamboo, the smell of tropical cloud forest. Bushy & cactury undergrowth. We put up one net in clearing (by 7 p.m. it [Excluded in morning, often photographed]) had a Syngny Owl, which we kept alive). M. & I set out about 30 pros tape near [in]dian & rocks in damp canyon. Overcast & threatening; locals said rains had at night, but rainy season about January. Fairly buggy too, humid, warm. Camp 2000' appx. 23 August 1969. Light sprinkle at night, 9/10 cumulo status in (storming) morning. Inspect sprhead 2 Mew only. Net had fine large bat (CK spec.), taken after 10 p.m. We hooled on. Crossed Rio Sana on bridge . 2 mi. albove camp, where canyon w/o de steep & cliffy. Then an we road-rocky, muddy in spots; often hit near [lump]er, difficult, a gas tank & would have stopped had good camp spot been available. Through La Florida - was sticky & m[oo]able, but some supplies available. Then on about 3 miles to Limuinto, about 400' where coffee dusher commenced. Road
