C. Koford 16 Journal Perg. 400 20 August 1969 Mo Cope, Dpto. Lambayeque, we searched for gopher among bushes w/ pressure lamp. M + L got about 7 smallish ones, some on ground, some in double fence, all fairly active. Later I got 2 large ones, sold, or large rock force, about 5' up, to smell we are grand; also I saw 3 more small ones, too active to get. Plenty of gopher here, of at least 2 spp. 21 August 1969. We each had an lot of same long-roded species in our net. M. took an swim mouse (spec; probably P. amecus) in traps, while I got 0. We drove w to Jayanca, then tried to find road into the desert to W, toward La Muelta. Roads confusing, and we went about 4 miles on one winding betweem log, slp stick, + barbed-wire fence, vineyard, & other crops, probably toward Monrope - but did not find the track into the "despolcado" to W. Hot & dusty. Often saw Fennecus along roads, or an arn. We returned to Sanotongo and went south to Monrope, then searched on road leading W. Various obscure branches. We wound up on one leading north to Tocume, drove through chores, forest-grayed mosquito "tingaj"-moving groups of people, & occasional patches of desert. Of last, worthy erasin pavement or sand, & little pure sand. We turned back through Monrope & camped about 2 mi. to E. near farmer site (this time getting stuck in sand, while trying to rock sand hills). Windy, but we set up 100 ft. net atop low sand hill. Myself sat about 20 [illegible] tops; plenty of mouse & big ant trouble. I worked on camp chores. We spent an hour about 8 p.m. looking for gopher, in 4/2 moon light, windy. M + L each found one (species). 22 August 1969. Mod. high fog morning. We also M. had 7 P. gerbillus in his snap traps. We extracted car, drove to Chiclayo, & looked up on supplies & repairs. Then hit south to Pi Sava, & started E. toward Heda. Orayton, searching for Taubis. Much sugarcane & at least two
