C. Koford 15 Journal Pern. 19 August 1969. 21 km. E. of Olmos, Opoto harrayque (M.L catlog). Drier than on previous visit, in 1967, but two birds of leizarda evident (as at red bridge camp). We set about 22 snap traps each & put up 3 nets - but little catch in the M.L. got 2 coealids in net, & R N some Antilines. | On evening I hunted gelbos away from and rock were causes, and found 3 in about 1 hrs. ML also found one (see catlog). Pleasant calm dryish (dewet) night. 20 August 1969. Pickled up traps; the others blanked, while I got 2 Phyllotea andium, on rock shelf under auto top 100' above Polly brush floor on N-facing steep slope, near casting drift & open tree. & about to give birth. Probably few birds breeding; no response to squeeze. A large raven gave loud descending calls near creek; somewhat canyon canary like but rather more callier, but more common (white throated res brownjune ?). | Put up specimen, cleaned up. Breezy nearly clear & pleasant in shade. We drove down Olmos valley. About 2 1/2 mi. Below red bridge we saw a 3' long teid skull across the road, then ran into brush. Continued onto Olmos (just off main road) for a few supplies; a working adobe small town - one of main industries was cutting mesquite firewood, selling charcoal. Then on S. to Motupe, & more supplies. Much local propaganda about the Milagros del Cruz de Chalpuno (at night, the mile of road winding up to the cross was lighted all the way). | We continued across river a few miles S. to foot of Cero de la Virgen, where we had looked for gelbos in summer of 1967. We set up 3 nets near foot of hill M. & I set trapsline, about 20 spots (mine set in shade). I worked at pryng off granite slabs for about 1 1/2 hrs. before getting a gelbo - it was very active, on E. side of hill about 5:30 p.m. - and came off rock w. the slab. | Much airborne sheep & goat grazing on the hill. Many cardeleira castors, & leafless grotesque trees. A statue of a woman on S. summit of the hill. | After dark
