13 August 1969
To Casma, Dst. Ancash, Per.
Traps took 2 Chylothet andinum, w. rattlesnake, both very long tailed, in boulders near dry creek. 1 Phryno ahaona (bolivina?) in cotton (= Mh catalog). Took five lizards in stream, then descended to Pariacoto (72 mi. below camp), Yauter (12 mi. farther), and Casma (25 mi. more) (= 51 mi. below 8500' camp). Then to Trigillo - stopped, ate. Modern town; a little dirty, dusty & prosperous (in contrast to dirty sprawling Chimbote). Drove N. and camped. 5 of Bacanayas near hemmocks of sand or volcanic pavement flat, w. Coparrisia shrubs on mounds. Set about 20 traps. Clear area.
14 August 1969. High fog morning, clearing slowly. Took 1 Mtn in traps (RH). Lizard found running over. ML found slumber skull (Cenotistia?). / We drove N to about 4 mi. E. of Morupe, when R Hamilton & I camped in Sept. 1967. I found 2 fox skeletons. We saw big blue faced teid in Coparrisia atop sand mounds, + Ctenosphaenus-like large lizards common on sand of same. We noted that last sometimes raised a forely & shook it, then the other, as if the animal found sand hot (10 am., not hot but fairly close). We drove through Morupe to our Rio San (little water), then took dirt road to court at Loguros. Passed through green brush, saw tomato fields on route. River ended in a small lagoon. Salt lagoon too, w. many small fish, Danio sarnicae (?), yellow lips, sand eels. Beach step of rounded rocks to 6" diameter. In rocks we many took 3 species of lizards (Tropidurus?). I found looking off felicians, dark gray skinkette, a terr., a Bargainville Cornut, blue-backed looline.
Road to Cuita Cte said to be very bad, came returned to Casma on a better road, slightly desert, arriving about 2 mi. N. of Rio Leiva. We camped then on volcanic pavement near bacanay & sand hemmocks coming w. large leaves Coparrisia. We set traps; lost 48 traps. Hope to get some Pardalys in addition to Mus. Many lizards & some fox tracks. Windy, but died about 7 p.m. In evening, ML, ML & I took become tenting & searched sand.
