tunnel on road to Chavin. Saw an Aplomado Folia perched a giant boulder or slope. Food around about but went fairly directly up valley in small stream to Cabul (on benchmark post) tunnel. Valley grassy, slopes rich and granite boulders, and some areas had much quercia mixed with boulders. Sheep grazing, & some cattle. Tunnel about .4 mi. long, thru crest of cordillera, about 4000'. Slight snow on ground at that level; some big boulders in mite. above. E. side some what drain; steep-sided canyon. We saw a few big rock slides & found vicuoca droppings near base. In shallow pools in green water not saw many large (3") tadpoles, acres of 1 sq. mile of quercia on slope here too; heard sheep bleating. A few rock walls. Much snow on peaks above road. We saw several yellow finches in black hoods (Klidi?), flying near road & bushes. Took photos. About 1 mile down road from tunnel to the rock slide. / We went back through tunnel and about 7 miles back toward Querosca, when we camped about 2 mi. E. of the lake, at about 500' higher level. We are about 6 mi. WSW of Cab Cabul Tunnel, 13000'. A clear 6' wide stream meander by our camp, in grassland flat in canyon bottom. To N. + 5 are steep slopes of huge boulders, w. patches of quercia. Down slope northy rich, w. boulders. We set traps. I put out 25 snares, 10 near rocks in rich, 20 near boulders in quercia jungle. Aside, a tangle of trees & boulders; shady, mossy. Vicuoca droppings in many holes under boulders. Ray set on slopes to N.; Myrnel set traps above mine on slope. She saw many fresh vicuoca droppings. Stream had small 4-6
