2 March 1962 Nr Tanakpur, India
reversing close to other; some wing holding out (incident?),
+ 2 attempts to mount, tho subordinates kept walking. The
black of wings is black velvet; striking. Jungle crow,
singing high
large hawks [black + white barrigo], small, one wings from below;
light across near wingtips),
Forested slopes; trees to 70'. Finally road open & drove to point
20 miles from Tanakpur, or shore of the wide (50 yds.) river. Much
cut timber sawt roughly to seize, floated down-river all day. Many
Nepalese carrying baskets on backs with temp line ahead,
going along trail all day; few women. They ate browned rice
concoction + liver for lunch. | We had gone up about 5 mi.
past Poongiri dam site, where some blasting + rockwork. |
Today trapper had taken 26 monkeys in morning. There were
jammed into two sacks and one small cage (2' x 3' x 1½').
Trapsite was on a 10' wide trail through forest on river
level, within 100 (?) yds. of wheatfield. | Across river on Nepal
side I saw 8+ rheas in alder-like trees on river level, in
trees 6' to 20' up; apparently new small leaves. All said very
dreadful punishments for catching monkeys in Nepal. Ehta.
photos of area; oles of gop. largens over home roof, + trapping
site on trail. | Logging northly of .5al, while her straight
trunks + conifer-like branch. This sawed into timbers of various
sizes, some 10" x 16" x 20; by hand. Saw shaped (main handle)
about 8' long. | We reached trap (the usual nit; corn bait)
at 3 p.m., & had no time to watch. So returned to base camp
& devoured our chapatties, & finally underway back toward
Tanakpur. But a truck stuck on road, some set for 2 hours.
