Journal 5 August 1969 Recay 10 mi. E. of Recay, Dto. Ancash, Peru. site: Anays: 1 under edge boulder, near shrub, tall ichu; 1 base Quenúa bush, under cutbank; 1 boulder wall base, mossy, ichu adjacent. Rhyllatii: 1 under edge large granite boulder, in tall ichu; 1 thick ichu, base of shrub, edge stranded. Onyzonys cornell, long tail: 1 base large tree, mossy green subtrole, ichu near; 2 under green bushes, in green sedge + grass; 1 in wet cut of bank, ichu mossy, green, fern-blue plants. Alcedo: 3 largest taken in highest (up canyon) traps, in shade by rocks, more under quenúa bushes (not dolivenis? - RH #58, = ). / Rainbow trout - I took 10+ with fly, including 4 from 8-12"; all larger ones were caught with meat. Others 4-6". Taken on gray fly, fishes rapidly upstream underwater. / Talked w. Indian women. Said this lake = Queroscaba. Later, man told me there is a tunnel about 15 km. on, that lowest annual temp. -3 or 4°C., in Aug- ust (he reads weather instruments here for hydroelectric project), that wet season is January-February, that road here since 1942, this only road to Catac area to Chavin. He raises sheep, some cattle. / We put up wire, set traps. I put out 15 snaps along each of 2 rock walls on wet-facing slopes. Georg collected a Bufo (spec.). / During the day, 3 caracaras landed at tinier within 5 yds. of tent, to get disarded mouse bodies. / I saw 2 Calopterus ruficeps, on ground in short grass + rocks. Also big Muscicariola w. white auto tail feathers. The chestnut Amayiba convex; some fed at pink flowers on shrubs. Saw a Butter, mostly white below, but near-black sec- ondaries. / Evening clear, calm. / Dissected 9 Alcedo dolivenis, 20gms., autumn swells. Also 67, 23 gms., 6.6. (Other dissec in catalog section.) 6 August 1969. Wind started 8 a.m. My 30 traps held: Andizonys, 1 fly- Colaptes, 1 Alcedo dolivenis (17gms., miniv. ?).
