C. Koford 3 Journal 3 August 1969 Dato Ancash, Peru in quick survey. Then we headed toward Recuay. At first stream (Rio Santo) sluggish, meandering, & grass nearly close - grazed. Later grass (ichu) taller. We walked in it, looking for tuiuan but saw none. I questioned a herder; he said "pendici" higher up, to E.; also that there were many deer on the slope W. of the road, & many trout in the Rio Santo. We noted many holes in old adobe walls - apparent fisher works. I flushed a snake by river; saw Cevolota, Seialis, other small birds. Crossed a ridge 12 mi. from Caracocha. About 15 mi. from that town, S. of km 340 sign, we took short joint up grassy draw to E., where a small stream & thick ichu; cattle grazing there too. I hunted for Notboprote and soon found a nest with eggshells (purplish brown) and a dead chick (not rotten yet!). This about 9" in diameter & tucked between layers of ichu clumps, where grass thick & ground rather dampy w. green short forbs. No. 4001 I shot a Cevolota, & saw Estheras. The few rock walls occurred near (10.7 mi. by road, 5. of Cutac) so drove on to 1967 campsite (45 km., S. of Recuay). altitude only indicated 12800' (if Caracocha 13,400'), tho we indicated 11,000 on previous trips. Windy, overcast, occasional light sprinkle. We set up tent. Snowy-gloomy mountains a few miles to E. An Indian told me the place was "Peguipalca", and that our 1967 campsite at Rackacora, was a short distance no north. He said tuiuan abundant in grass, trout abundant but small in river, and many deer in the high hills to E. and W. We labeled locality 25 mi. S. Recuay, 12500', [the previous by gave 11000' for Caracocha, in '46-7]. We put out traps. I flushed 1 hrs., jumped No. 4002 ed a Notboprote in live - high grass on flat & bogged it, and flushed ed another pair (all 5-6 p.m.). The specimen was an adult ?, which
