Spent most of day arranging for reception of dangerous tuberculosis shipment (Mr. Steen & Lt. Col. Reeves at Embassy; Mr. Cully at WHO, SEARO). WF WHO headquarters in Patiala House, Princess Park. Good building but much antiquated + crowded interior, with wooden partitions. Presumably WHO will receive tuberculin, as they have no refrigeration, Embassy will store it. Examined monkeys sent from Mailani. Some pregnant; some very old. Many had cuts or healed legs from bites of other, capture injuries, or cuts from inside bamboo cages. Looks soft + pale (from dry grain diet?). Coats mod. poor. They were weaker than Cayo's animals, & large ad. 7 weighed only 17 lbs. (looked like our 076c). Kept separate in 6 cages, in groups caught in. In one cage, ad. & gr. old. 7. Several ? & pregnant. She evening departed by train for Bareilly.
2 March 1962 . Arrived Bareilly 0300. Met by Supta and Saroop, and we drove to Tanakpur. Supta then slept & we huddled; finally underway and drove into hills to N, up Dhulgarh River. Hills start abruptly about 2 miles from Tanakpur. Arrived at forest station & found that control road traffic was in the other direction 0830-1230; we arrived 0930! So long wait + delay. In forest or flat, I saw 6+ fine langurs in tree. In Tanakpur we stayed in a Doh bungalow - rooms & rope beds but no bedding, water, or other conveniences. I walked along road up riverside & observed birds. Purple sunbird evidently feeding young in hanging nest. Nest 1/2 off ground hanging from rock above. She returned every 2-5 min. Shiny black or sometimes green near. I also saw 7+ Vervettes on river shore. At one site a coucalbird, are turning around &
