C. Koford 23 Journal 27 February 1962 Mr. Dharwar, Mysore, India Again clear. About 0830 (why so late ?) we left for first large area, ms. Aliyah 8 milepost. Then y. shrewd + photoged group 2 (1071148 5 inf.). He said no more pregnant, and that gm. I had 1788 and no inf. About 11 a.m. about 6 of group in single tree, in 15' dam., & stayed time long. Inactive at midday. But this group had been turned thru watching + allowed approach to 10 yds. I y. said infra. areas, each other much less than in macaques. I observed another group in open 30'tall nearly leafless forest where ground burned. Some ran off one way, & some another - poor cohesion. (y. said or often runs away from gp.). Across road amid will-spread shrubs with occas. trees (leafless), largus ran on ground when I approached, and would not ascend tree. (y. said they do ascend when dogs pursue.) / On ground one "fleshed" cloud teeth at me, then left (teeth prom. in black face). (y. said only or gnish teeth in aggr. display. y. said other 42 the take infant from mother especially during first week of life.) I departed Dharwar by train 1600 for Bombay. 28 February 1962. Arrived Pune 0625; on to Bombay on Decca Queen, arriving 1030. Cloudless, misty, hot, still day. Phone Dharwar, Delhi, who said successful trapping near Tonkhpur, about 3 mi. N. Bareilly, in Kaunoh Hills area at Nepal border. / During day visited aquarium, & Bombay Natural History Society headquarters. They had one large room, about 30 x 80 ft., crowded with old wooden specimen cases + rusty specimens. Very run down appearance, tho fair library & excellent owl balcony view to the bay. Talked with 2 men there, & with Salim Ali (ornithologist) by telephone. A migratory bird census to be held near Bharatpur, 107 mi. by rail from Delhi, in Rajbanton, Mar. 15- April 1. / Took evening plane to Delhi, arriving Ploom 2145.
