C. Koford Journal 9 July 1967 Rio Santa Clara, Sierra del Nido, Chihuahua in me tree. C. Kingbird - 30+. Snailers - 2 together, glossy black. Red-winged Blackbird - 5+, singles, 7+ 2 s. Killdeer - 5+. Juv. Robin (speckled breast). [ = Lesser Screech Owl ] Scraping ducks - lead dull black, or brownish and mottling posterior half rocks; sandpipers prob. some we saw in flooded pool, as can fly; in extreme nw. comp. Mexican Duck - 50+. Flushed as from swamps among willows, but found no nest. Bewick's Wren - on atop willow bush. Orchard Oriole - pv., + 3+ blue, (10') in low thick willows. M. Dove - 30+; found 3 nests, all on thick branch as of tree willower; one with 2 eggs visible, 16' up; other 10'-12', nr. no young visible. Sand Jay - on or near branch cottonwood. Barnswain Nighthawk - flew at 5/15. Civa selected a Vernalia Flycatcher, said to saw quail (prob. Nodalquin, in dry grass area). Evening - many M. Doves flew over bottom in gps. up to 9 - perhaps 50 passed in 1 hr. 2 Great Blue Herons flew over above. Red-tailed Hawk - we pursued by 3 C. Kingbirds. [Yellowthroated Warbler 4+] in tree willows near fall-covered openings of bottom. 10 July 1967. Rain last night. We listened for 1+ hrs. after dark, but heard no dangerous birds. I took walk in bottom 0730-1000. Saw [illegible] Meadowlark, Sparrow Nevadsky Killdeer 5+, M.Dove, B-H Dazaskeake (2), Hummingbird (red size, [ = 2 Broad-tailed? ]) dark gorget, gray back, gray breast dark tail (mobile), straight bill, green back: ?? 6+ (10') Mockingbird, Mexican Duckers, Blue Grosbeak, Bewick's Wren, Bird Daffodil 8+ (droop of 5 in bare top of willow), small flock w. black skin, yellow breast, brown back: ?. Brown-headed Cardinal - one ad or displayed + "glunk" as in (aunt tail f. white) front of 4 n.juv. [Hairy?] Dainty Woodpecker (3). Green Herons (in 2, 3x) Lake Spar- row (usually edge of bottom area). Red-tailed Hawk - apparent juv. in bare cottonwood; 3 Kingbirds dive at it, + pursued it in flight. 2 Sand Jays same tree. Flushed Senn Woodpecker. Pair of Nodalquin Duck - in patch of green rocks, edge cornfield, nr. few + willow - 300 yds. to ools. Half-grain Cattail? [Racoon trochus]. H. Quail - flushed pair 20' from blue oak tree.
