C. Koford 35 Journal 7 July 1969 Rio Santa Clara Sierra del Ndo, Chihuahua grassland - 2 skul blue eggs w. brown periling, one end. C. Kingbird frequent. Killdeer - saw about 5 in 1 hr. Acorn Woodpeckers in blue oak of slopes, and also big dead cottonwood of bottom. 2 together. Ash-throated flycatcher in willow tree of bottom. Orchard Oriole - 2 singles. Morning Doves - often (or); found nest w. pin-feathered nestlings only 4' up on a lively small isolated willow tree, in a 15' isolated willow, adult + 2 feathered juvs. (could fly 50yds) setting, about 8' up. Sparrow Hawk - 3 in 1 hr.; bottom & blue oak. One flock 12 Mexican Doves - flushed no singles; not nesting here yet? Met about 5 dorsal gentlemen (yellow dark stripes) in 1 hr., in wet green grass. 2 Bullock Orioles (black throat, wing bar) in isolated 25' willow. 2 Mockingbirds. 3 Flickers - in blue oaks, adjacent willows. Lark Sparrow - on ground, dry grass, near & in blue oaks. / George went hunting & logged White-tailed Jackrabbits. / Day continued 8-10/10 cumulus, but no rain by midday. / Occas. Brown Tanager on boulders in dry grassland. / Drove west to Mormonite store (fresh meat?), & quesadillas. Saw 5 Badger dead on road 1 mi. W. of Bridge. River ran about 10' wide, muddy. Near store saw House Sparrow conference. Returning, saw a Swainson Hawk on fencepost, 1/2 mile E. of Bridge. Three Turkey Vultures at the bodega canons. Drizzled from 1300-1700. George said he found partly complete Yellowthroat nest, & that he saw quail (sp.? ) in dry grasslands near camp. / I looked for birds on bottom among trees willow & cottonwoods 1600-1815. Saw 10+ Green-backed Daddfisher, & Yellowthroats (in the willows), 5+ single Little Green Herons, 5+ Summer Tanagers (very red @; some in yellow clothing) distress plumage w. a few diffuse red patches on scapulars; juvs?). W.W.Para 2, Blue Grosbeaks, 8+ (pink Dan drooping, low cottonwoods, and on dry stolon tall fabs). White-breasted Nuthatch - 2; in willow timber. Danny (?) Woodpecker (outer tail feathers white), Flickers, 5+, including 2 juvs. to- gether, flying clumsily. Sparrow Hawks, 5 - including gp. of 3 juveniles
