C. Koford 33 Journal Chihuahua, Mexico Cañon del Alamo, Sierra del Mds. 7 July 1969 plain, a Prairie Falcon landed 50 yds. from me, a Brown-headed Cowbird in its claws. It fed, & when flushed flew only 50yrs. before landing again, still with 'its' prey. There are rock bluffs in hills 2 miles to N.; potential nesting sites. | At Cooyt in heavy rainstorm, which flooded roads, but finally arrived at ranch & talked with Sebastian Barrera. No recent arrival experiences from here. We camped 1/2 mile above houses. | Up canyon I saw jibs, spotted Toucanet, Mexican Jays mobbed an owl (Great Horned?). Few 6300' (6500 of 51 store; 7500 m. Colin) birds out in light rain. Camped there. Saw a few cottontails in brush of canyon bottom. | Near the "51" store and in Cañonments 51 we saw House Sparrows & House Finches. On road about 2 miles S. of mouth Cañon del Alamo, we saw a Badger dead on road among ploughed fields near grazing land. | Whip-poor-will & Por willie called at night. 8 July 1969: Drizzle continued all night and until about 0830. saw a Curve-billed Thrasher atop an ood. | Sparrow Hawk flew over. Several W. Bluebirds seen. | I walked up Cañon Escandido. Saw 2 does well (up grass slope among oaks & mesquites. In canyon, F. Loder, Streakless Woodpecker. Canyon about 100 yds. detur. walls, 100' high, cliffs in some areas. Bottom had juniper, ash, blue oak, silvery-leaf oak, pinyon pines (to 100'), small-leaved pine (3 needle, 3"). On mesa above, open st and oaks about 15' tall, some juniper, rare piñon - many Chipping Sparrows, occas. Brown Towhee. | About 1/2 mile N. of camp heard Gopher- tailed Trogon calling near canyon bottom. Finally saw 2 ?? in a brief conflict, a ? nearby. One of had tetsi 4 mm (Eila kept it for souvenir). | Scattered cloude now, then heavier cloude again & light showers. We departed Rancho del Alamo.
