5 July 1969 Arroyo Mestazo, Sierra de Nido, Chilahuaca boulder, 10 yds from penin; about 9300'; 3 fuzzy new nestlings. Returns to bivouac, then visited goshawks nest area again. Only one adult in vicinity. One resting now set up on tanki high. Overcast, intermittently sprinkling. Back at cabin area heard C-t. trogon call from opposite slope. George had recorded Earls Trogon. He played both calls of Spotted Owl, & were answered from slope opposite. He played calls of Pygmy Owl, and was not answered. [W]L. Leuze had over about 2am, but seems to be developing a drool patch.
Monday
7 July 1969 Drizzly morning. Walked to foot of Varitas Rock. Saw pair Harlequin Quail at edge bottom; they ran up into brush slope. Depot of bottom grass now green, from recent rain. Another pair harlequin quail. Zigzaged up slope, calling in bubble-brusts. At Varitas, yet another pair at edge bottom. Saw rillatulae at foot slope at edge bottom - did rains make them more conspicuous? or overcast? [illegible] also saw more white rain streaks. One bunny 3/4 grown, w/o ear marks. Departed cabin & drove down Mestazo. 500' drop, cabin to point of leaving streambed. On flatish savannah E. of cottleguard, saw Ash-throated Flycatcher, Scull Jay, Mexican Jay, pair of Repetitive Trogons, Acorn Woodpecker. [Mestazo] Lift panel via cottleguard & drove S. Mourning Doves, Mexican Jays, W. Mesaslabber, [illegible], Red-tailed Hawk, Tanager (red), C. Kingfisher, 1 Booming Night-haula. Pines mainly the Nth 3 needles are. [Pampas], down to about 6600' level. Oaks ended 6500'; 5.3 mi. below cottleguard. Last crossing Mestazo at 6100'; 9.3 below cottleguard. Threatening clouds. Bought cheese, supplies. Then towards Barabo Canyon del Alamo. En route saw 3 Blue Grosbeaks (2 off), on flat grasslands near brush [illegible]. About 2 miles out on
