1961 Lower camp
4 July 1969 Arroyo Mesteño, Sierra del Nidy, Chihuahua
A few spots drinkable water this. Many silver-leaf oak in bottom. Cliffs 100' high.
Juniper tree. Grave plate. Bottom 50 yds. wide, streamed 20'. (Checked). Have
said both spotted & Great Horned Owl taken here. Pr. of Hepatic (?) tanager in a

pine tree, edge gravel. A few red-height pine in camp area. | We drove an
up canyon. Saw a Rock Wren on boulders in dry site. In narrow part canyons blue
olins; heard calls of 2 Copper-tailed Trogon. 100% overcast, sultry. To cabin for
[at Mesteño Topin], saw one with 3 fledglings].
campsite. Barn Swallows in attic now had 4 nestlings (hatched since last visit). Violet-
green swallows flying near cabin. | Dove rooting & calling in oak near cabin.
Occasional few Band-tailed Pigeons near. Scanning saw a Cottontail in scrubby oak
1/4 mile N of cabin. In evening had Spotted Owl call from cliffs S. of cabin. Heard Whip-
poor-wills in evening. North of an hour after dark but heard a sow no
game or owls; very quiet. Set 11 live traps in rocks among tree on slope
behind cabin (caught 3 Pinyons). | Put up net between blue oak tree and
small pine (caught 3 loris [put in formalin]) and a Ridgetail Owl between.
10 p.m. & 7 a.m. The owl was in net 1 1/2' from dead lot (Gatesicus?) which
5 July 1969. was dead + had punctures in one ear, + bloody ear (other 2
both alive). Presumably Fox and attacked but in net. (Kept and or pet.).
Apricicle last night; clears after morning. Heard C.-t. Trogon calling 1/4
miles W., in Mesteño arroyo. | Of the 3 Pinyons taken, # 187-94-20-19, 6
mt. scars; # 191-99-21-19, 5 mt. scars, + juv. of. One saved. | Near cabin,
C. Kauglis', Acorn Woodpecker, Fledgling W. Wood Mouse. | George went up Mesteño
to nest Card Trogons. Cribet & I went up Mesteño to San Mill Flot, where we
flushed pair Northern Quail from their diggings under shrubs. Ascending
a side slope
we saw 4 White-tailed Deer, 2 or 3 w. 2" antlers in velvet,
doe + yearling. Saw W. Bluebird feeding on ground. Flock of Bushtit
came near. | Near old MVZ camp, saw a Squirrel in scrubby pine, about
