C. Koford 29 Journal 3 July 1969 Arago del Alamo, Sierra del Nido Chivolvina ascended to W edge of Mesa de los Venados. A band of 8+ Chickadee w. 2+t Titmice. Band of BushTit w 2 war. Many Bluebird, robin, chipping sparrow. To edge of muddy reservoir. On shore, Chipping Sparrow, W. Bluebird, Brown. Red-bellied Coelibr (5+ new cars). Over water, Violet-green Swallow, Brown Sparrow, Martens (also drove a wing). A Turkey Vulture at edge pool. When we first approached reservoir, it was still 200 yds away, a gp. of 16+ large Turkeys ran N from (shade?) near pool; then a gp. of 20+ ran S far over the water. No chielr. There were two ldlirer, carefully made of sticks, near the water. [Baza said that Juan, a Mormonite, had recently killed about 8 turkeys on the level, here & at Alamo. He shot them w/ shotgun.] On Mesa we saw four lorjads, no smoksr. A partly overcast sunny day. We descended Ojts - birds very quiet, even near the living spring. In the old Sawmill area, saw 2 Red-faced Warblers, Mexican Jays, Steller Jay juvs./Returned to camp. Looked along cliffs for Spotted Owl nest; found only a feather, but flushed owl from a tree. Also flushed a pair of Harlequin Quail. Clouds increased & heavy rain came up canyon. Not enough to make creek run, but freshened things considerably. Spotted Owl calls after rain, before dark. Light rain at night, but cleared up. Loran 4 July 1969. A C-t Trogon came to stream near our net. Again saw jnr. Steller Jays. Saw pair of Harlequin Quail near Lloran spring. Saw 3 White-breasted Nuthatchers in orites (family?). Baza reported finding a Pass-will nest on W-aspect slope near camps. | We drove down to Masters Ranch headquarters, then to Laura cattlegrind, and drove toward Masters arroyo. E. Saw a Loggerhead Shrike (highest seen? about 7000'). Thrasher. Spotted Sandpipr in ports, 2 Daisy Ducks or pond & whi albacar bousers. | Baza said that he saw young turkeys (albac) [high ?] with 2 adults about a week ago. | Lloran Cooo indicated, Masters ruin, 7600' i. elev. We walked 500 yds down Martin's, stumbled to old '461 lower MV-2 camps.
