C. Koford Journal To Loron, Rancho El Mestero, Chihuahua, Mexico. 1 July 1969. 3 hrs. First caught was Slectus; then few of them, but about 10 p.m. took 5 Slectus at once. Net took no later 10:30 p.m. to dawn. Cool dew night. Two White-tailed Deer fled from near spring when we arrived. Everything still looks very dry. Low oak brush w. brown sky leaves, & many oaks on slope bluffs. 2 July 1969. Near Llano, in canyon, saw Painted Redstart, W. Bluebird, M. Dove, Stellar Jay, C Kingbird, Flicker, House Finch, Caver (?) Kingbird, Turkey Vulture, C-t. Trogon. In air flock: Chipping Sparrows, 2 titmice, 2 Dushtlits, 2 chickadees; about 12 in all. 10+ Dushtlits in gp. in pine; disturbed by Pigeon and owl call. Written (?) Uris, Brown Creeper. Near C-t Trogon on pine and rockslope seemed to respond to imitated calls. Sp. of Mexican Jays, 10+, including juven. Saw a fledgling Stellar Jay. Saw a Canyon Wren flushed up Chupco del Alamo. Saw C-t Trogon at Ojito fork. Found fresh green cone core of white pine. This pine & Douglasfi had many cones. Saw a squirrel in a white pine; it froze about 4' out on a limb about 40' ups, lying close to top of limb. Proved to be a 7, post-limbiny, with no nick at nipple and no cut scars (cut from 50 mm x 4). In flock saw chickadees, titmice, and may Dushtlits (6+ total) in shady canyon bottom; came close slowly Pigeon and owl call. Red-forested wren in oak branches. White-lin. Nuttatch on oak trunk; came to Pigeon Owl call. Two hawks flew over. Another Red-forested Wren. Heard 4 Coppery-tailed Trogons in about 1 mile of canyon, from Llano to Ojito. Early morning heard Spotted Owl call from camp, & C-t Trogon calls too. A net near stream took Chipping Sparrow, Brown Thrasher. Along the streamside I saw Chip. Sparrow, Robin, Acorn Woodpecker, Stellar Jay, C-t Trogon, Black-headed Grosbeak (?), Painted Redstart. James fed on ground in that grove near water. W. wood Perice lumbles from low perch in clearing (this bird widespread in Delit, from low to high altitude, somewhat elusitive). Mexican Jays - saw gp. 6+, including yellow-billed jays. Walked up canyon to Samuel area, then
