C. Kofard 27 Journal 1 July 1969. Rio Santa Clara, Chihuahua, Mexico 6' above water, was an adult Bob-Cat in full view, huddled against rock of cave about 4' deep. Some five approached to about 20', to take photo, the cat ran out, up the rocks & away. | Both squirrels - on or off 5' level on rocky slope! (crossing to S. bank immediately) We departed for Mesteros. Road wound around hills, sometimes rocky, with much ocotillo, & other tumer dry grass. Occasional gates. | About 11 mi. S. of San Lorenzo (on road), we looked down on string of cottonwoods along the river and saw in top of one small group, 6 first Blue Herons (including 2 or dead juven.), 6 fresh appearing nests, + some old nests in topg trees. | About 1/2 mi. S. of S.L., road broke farther to E. of canyon and higher into the hills, so more grass & less ocotillo. When boulders + ocotillo, no greenery, I saw 2 Bob-Cats. | About 15 mi. S., oaks and junipers, + about 19 mi. S., dry grassland hills with live oaks to 30' high, 1/2 drain along draws. There saw black-headed Grosbeaks, a few Woodpeckers, W. Bluebirds, Brown Towhees, Mexican Jays. Bluebirds, towhee, grosbeaks fed on open grounds under an oak. Many gates, winding road, + ups + downs, slow going. | Canyons with willow, walnut, cottonwoods (saw W.W. Pares, House Finches, Lark Sparrows. | Passed through Ranchos Los Animas, the farthest N. I reached last fall. Then on to Ortega, & W. to road to ranches El Mesteros. Saw flocks 30+ Horned Larks on way. Also Lark Sparrows, Meadow-Larks. | Drove toward Mesteros Ranch. First oak trees were "blue oak" and grew their flat O-shiny (on both sides) leaves. On into ranch and campfire at Llano. [After bobcat incident, one of the men told me that about 2 yrs. ago some black bear came down to the Santa Clara River]. | Before dark, Spotted Owls started calls from cliffs E., and hisstion from comps; soon they were quiet loudly (go to feed?). Heard whip-poor-wills early, Poor- wills late. | Put up 1/2 net across stream puddles (nearly dry except for about 2 stretches of about 100 yds.) & took about 20 bats in 2 or
