Journal 30 June 1969 (5 mi. S. of San Lorenzo) Rio Santa Clara, 5400', Chihuahua, Mexico. But no habit problems. Large entertain with owl voice recordings. No habitations within 4 miles, but occasional house or car traffic. River drinkable. We looked app- arantly for catching fish. Mesa del Apache dominated eastern skyline, appar- ently since atop that mountain. 1 July 1969. Much moving bird activity. Saw 2 pairs Bronzed Cowbirds on rocky shore, displaying. Killdeer. Pair Orchard Oriole: Bellbird's Warbler (1). Perches on low bare branches of trees. Mockingbird singing. In mesquite patch, saw 2 prs. Seeded Quail. White-breasted Nuthatch on big limbs of oaks. House Sparrow, House Finch (flock 20+ feeding lawn ground), Barn Swallow. Many Lake Sparrows near with House Sparrows. Soil smell gre. Bankswallows Pigeons in trees. Brown-headed Cowbird (1). In a 25' tall cottonwood, saw a Tomcat Scanning apacal which allowed approach to 20'. It appeared freshly, healthy, & much excited by my speaker. (Came down for water to feed on the Papadrian? -the white-taw 2 cm. drain + edible). On a branch over river, 4 junc. Barn Swallows (old fled). 7 Mexican Ducks flew 100'over. Blue Grosbeak in mesquite meadow. 2 Ash-throated Flycatcher fought in mesquite. A Best Blue Heron flewover, low. Acorn Woodpecker in cottonwood-walnut area. A Cree. killed Thrush called inside top, walnut. Found Hog-nosed Snake season. Brown Towhee - foraged at edge water, on gravel w/100 cover. | I saw a few Snow Deer in willows + heard others in cottonwoods. White-throated swift flew over river cotton trees. Red-breasted Woodpecker (2) in cottonwood. Saw juice Black Hawk, perched, being disheveled by C. Kingfisher. D.P. said he saw a cornman (E.C. also saw it, and) murmer Skunk and two young men rode up agitatedly & asked if we had an "arrow." I said, "no." Then he said that he had seen an animal "way fro" in a cow a short distance spectrum; a "get money." We followed them; they rode us some more on their horses 2-3 x. Finally we came to 20' streambeds red cliff with some small caves. In one, about Sciurus Bobcat
