Santa Clara River, 5400', Chihuahua Mexico
Old high shoreline jumbled w. cottonwood logs. Bottom (dry) stems with rotted cholla & prickly pear stems. Many dead large trees (cottonwoods?) sticking out of muds above lake surface. On one of these tree skeletons near lake center, was about 6 stick nests. The 3 lower were swan's, & on 2 seemed to be setting a [illegible]. The One of the The highest nest bore a Great Blue Heron and apparently 2 jims; 2 similar nests appeared empty. We saw all at range 200 yds or so on hot day w. binoculars, as details not clear. B.P. saw a comant fly from nest tree. Coste - many scattered clay shoreline among old posts dead trees; at least 7 in 100 m.
Whole lake surrounded by pale brown hills - rocky, w. grass, cactus, & brush. / To S. of lake & few miles (10 from Cariteo), con. 3' tall in level green fields or mud bottom, & also edged w. big walnut, willow, cottonwoods, & oases. fruit trees. Ocas. we saw Mockingbirds & Bob White Quail's. / Arrived at spread out pleasant adobe town of San Diego, 13 mi. S. of Cariteo. A few store then, & a few hundred people, apparently.
Then drove on about 5 mi. to where road descended to cross the river. The water was clean & running, 8-50' wide, & contained many fish to about 6" long. Banks rocky, sandy, & lined irregularly w. large cottonwoods (some 6' ft. dbh), willows, walnuts. Some patches mosquito on bottom too. To W. of the green strip, ocotillos, cactuses, rocky slopes, & dry short grass land beyond. Many frogs in river. I found a 6 "turtile shell. saw Black Phalar, C. Longbird, M. Dover, a few W.W. Doves, Bandtailed Pigeons, Mockingbirds 2 Orchard Orioles, Curve billed Thrasher, heard "chasing" of Yellow-billed Cuckoos. In eve, Lesser Nighthawks flew over stream. A forest Blue Heron flew-on. Heard no Copimulges or Poorwill calls. But food calls common. Noted a number of larks over river. Took & released 2 Morning Doves. / after dark a local delegation called (with firearms) to ask what we were doing,
