Rancho Providencia, Sierra del Nido, Chihuahua,
I thought some of them were Turkey Vultures. Saw Band-tailed Pigeon, Brown Towhee,
Chilesucker, Band-tailed Pigeon. Trogon followed along hillside, as if following me.
Christmas looked up main canyon. Then all look to get off the road for Mojave
Camp area. Along road saw 2 Asterix spilosoma on mounts in dry grassland.
Also Meadowlark, Brown Towhee. Thursday: Rincón del Alamo Roadquarter, then
N. thru ranch (Plan). Mesquite, Palo Verde, 50% grass & forbs. Pairs of
Scaled Quail near road, Mockingbird. Occur. Chilopsis lush, area of Opuntia
prickly pears. Rancho Plan had cottonwoods, 3 windmills, large house. Saw S. Kingbirds
thru, + Barn Swallows in yard. Beyond to N., thick Palo Verde, then tall Mesquite
zone. Oriole, Kingbird, Mockingbird. Passed thru layer, saw some birds for
various other Lined Doves, Grasshopper Sparrow, Cliff Swallows, House
Sparrows. Bad notes. Copper. Then on N. Mesquite large at first, then mostly
Opuntia and grass. Rather barren or approached Cariteira. Turned W.
Mojave Camp
a paved road for 5 mi. Then turned S. on Mira Mojave road (good dirt +
gravel road). About 4 mi. on, beginning of F. Larrea area, 6 mi. from
road, reached the line of 30' walnut tree (dark green, shady) where MVZ gps.
camped in 1961. Morning Doves, S. Kingbirds, Scott's Oriole / about 50 walnut
trees, deep green foliage, to about 40', spread over area about 200 yds. long + 40
wide, across the dirt road at foot of a steep rocky slope to W. This slope
vegetable, mesquite
has cactus, shrubs, + some andropogon; very dry + desert appearing. On E.
side of cottonwood walnut (which grew at edge of flat bottom), a zone about 100
yds wide of bunch grass ( Sporobolus ?) about 5' tall. Some of it burned off,
some mixed with a little mesquite. Borders: Bordering gone to N+ E, from
open mesquite shade, with heavy deer grazing between. This last area
had some Digutongya mounds + trees. Beyond the mesquite, to NE, zone of
Larrea on erosion pavement. Said square miles of Larrea, but apparently
surrounded by other types. I set 15 snap traps on eastern-rock slope.
