Rancho Providencia, Sierra del Nido
28 June 1969
A few day before a mechanic at Providencia told us there was an all white
bird near R. del Nido; we had snubbed at this. Went W. thru green gate, 3.7
(mi.) to Pajonito gate, then an 2 mi. to entrance R. Rincon del Olmo, thence
up C. de la Modera to locked gate, 3 mi. from gate. Near mouth of
C. del Nido, colour house, saw a white sided jachnallcat (3 or 4 saw it).
Also, 11 parrots flew over, going toward plains for evening feed, high.
Drew jeep along this foothill road, starting near Del Nido ranch houses.
On plain in south saw 3 Sparrow Hawks, (usual Horned Larks,
Meadow Lark, Lark Sparrows). And we flushed a pair of Keel Quail
with 5+ chicks, domy & tiny but pin feathers of under wing about
1 cm. long. When parrots flew, chicks disappeared as if by magic -
some went into month's burrow, which was partly crammed with dry
weeds. Hard to catch- checked from low center to cattlewar, etc. 1/2 mile
after turning off C. de la Madre road, flushed 2 Harlequin Quail, above
mostly grass & only scattered shrubby cobs. On way to gate, flushed
about 4 more pairs. In eve, 2 Booming Nightjar flew over, high,
but booming. Heard Purwille (no Capemillgus) in see. Camped at
6 500' miles alt. (< 200 LPH).
gate in cobs on dry rolling grassland.
Cama de la Modera
29 June 1969. Sunday, Heard Purwille call early morning. Kingbirds
noisy. A flock of 27 Parrots flew high over. Walked up canyon to old
camp next trough, about 2 mi. Pink
