C. Koford 16 Journal 26 June 1969 Canion del Mido, Sierra de Nick (Chihuahua) of cliff.) Saw 2 juv. Strickland's Woodpecker, full grown, on oak trunk, started up from near bottom of trunk. A rocky canyon, a gps of parrots flew over spaced 2, 2, 2, 3, 4 = (1). Saw 2 Black-headed Sparrows in tree cypress over strewned, both in 7 plumage. Much Telloandria in this canyon; on cliff face, oak branches, occililo stellar - perhaps only place in Sierra del Mido (= camp ?). Saw 2 Myjoculus tuberculifer in dead oaks by foot of cliff, 60' up. 1500. Saw 3 juv. Motina faya in gps. Spectled Towler - seed x saw on in canyon bottom. 1 Black-headed Sparrows on occililo. A few Band-tailed Pigeons. Found several small water holes in bottom at one site. Water full of algae and dozens of toes of Leopard Frogs. Birds comparatively numerous near the water area. Saw Black Phoebe by water. About 1530, started back. Saw gps, 20+ noisy parrots flying over. Erik said that for a time a large group perched in a pine halfway up cliff. Heard Caprimulgus at night, + a small owl which called ------- Sawge seemed crucial, apparently of Barn Owl in cliffs. Campsite faces (to N.) 700 ft. red cliffs, w. many holes. When we arrived, D.P. had seen antelope deer (1) go up slope below cliffs. Carlogan said a big reservoir over ridge to N. of us (area of Los Fresnos ?). One said a bear had been killed on the llanos by atraves, + that the skin [not checked out.] was at Providence Headquarters. They also said that coyotes had killed several colvers (?) on the plains. They knew of subs owls that lived on the plains in "tuneras." Said snakes on plains, but rattlesnakes scarce now. Hot day; clear, but some wind. 27 June 1969.
