C Koford 12. Journal Mexico. 23 June 1969 Arroyo Mestero, Sierra del Nido, Chihuahua, on slopes to W. of ojo, seen small cliffs, heard spotted owl. range recorded some, rather weakly, & played back. No initial response, so tried vocal imitation. Finally owls flew over, perhaps 200 up, calling - - / in flight. Soon, one or both perched in trees above us.. range played back call, and we soon had variety of vocalizations recorded at very close range. Slept at ojo, nearly 8000'. 24 June 1969. About 0630, saw livoli Hummingbird, o7 and f, and one drake and little troch, standing on ground. Also saw white-eared kind & hooded-tailed Hummingbirds, in openings in canyon bottom. Also saw Band-tailed Pigeon, Steller Jay, Robin./ Saw pair of Summer Tanager in oak brush down a cañon side; one, f, or 2 mm.; insects crammed stomach. (E.B. said yesterday he saw Beece & Bluebird chase same insect, nearly striking in air.) Also at ojo, Chickadee, Painted Redstart (oak trunk & limbs), Band-tailed Pigeon (perched top of dead tree), Ap. Rufous-sided Towhee. Saw short- tailed jiv., Steller Jay. / Brown-headed Cowbird - one at tip top isolated dead pine snag. Pair of House Finches at streamside. White-throated Swift. Madre - about half leaves red (too dry?). / Below ojo, W. Bluebird, Contopus rich. (good, soft eggovid., 4 ovo and, 6-8 Robins, Band-tailed Pigeon, Englewood (kept chin; in small pine, canyon bottom). / Deer - saw 3, later 2, ascending slope from near canyon bottom. / Meadow-lark solana, large said found nest w. Bluebird w. 5 eggs, in tree hole./ We drove from solana back toward main road between (roadhouse) Neot, Sooty (fall) Vireo, over food in rocky canyon, 14' up in 15' blue oaky edge cañon, 3' from pine; 25 yds. from stranded & pool, 7000'. Lower in Mestero Canyon, when open rocky, saw one Cooper Hawk flying over ridge canyon. Then across flat-topped grass & spaced oaks, where saw scrub Jays, Brown Towhee. Out through Mesteró settlements.
