C. Koford 11 Journal Mexico 23 June 1969. Arroyo Mesteno, Sierra del Nido, Chihuahua, streambed, w water in "canos" about 20' long. Saw Steller Jay, pair of Hummers Tanagers (in last large oak), white-capped Hummingbird (1 drunk in opening, on water - fills cattle trough), House Finch. / Above the ojo a Black-headed Bunting sang. We climbed slope over rocky ground; groves scattered Blue Oak, Pinon, to edge of Mesa de los Venados. On our slopes Painted Redstart foraging on bark of oak & pinon. Some maguey plants at edge mesa (1200, 8500'), Robins, Turkey Vulture, 2 P. Redstarts, w.w.bewee, v.g. Swallen, Martens, Audubon Warbler (Black-breast), small livers Flicker, Mexican Jay, Bluebird. Flushed a p. Bluebird from 2 stulbs, in hole ice (nest's prob.) [which for sp.?] Saw 2 Bay-winged Nuttallin in pine foliage. Saw nest of House Finch perched near hole in pine stub. / On rafters of a fired tough roof, nest of a Barn Swallow w/ 4 eggs. Saw Mexican Junco, before - s. Tanager, on ground. 1 Curve-billed Thrasher in juniper. A pair of Violet-green Swallows perched near hole in trunk living oak, 10' ups. Saw Acorn Woodpecker. Martens perched atop stub. / Mesa vegetation large pinon, well spread, including many snoops, no large oaks, large junipers (alljecta); ground rocky. Near northedge, mostly pinon, & patch of white - flowered Cleather. / On Arroyo de los Amorres, almost entirely pinon on N-expect slope; then pinoons, junipers, magueytes, & manzanitas, but mostly Oaks, on S. expect slope. / Chipping Sparrow - fed atop Carcelhus budber. To pass at head of Ojo del Venado, & started down 1510. Recked ojo at 1550. Found dead wolf of which Vogueson told me, in stranded 1/4 mile down Ojo. Apparently had been poisoned, they said. Hair still on most of body. Took skull shell (photos head). / At low Vautier canyon in eve, heard Barncills whip - posn - well. Today Erik took Steller Jay g, about out or not enlarged, his specimen). A Bartails Pigeon had roosted to ground deer. I eve returned to ojo Venado, to sleep & listen for owls.
