Journal 22 June 1969 Arroyo Mesteno, Sierra de (Ndy Chihuaha slade under big oaks & oak tree. We hiked up to ridge to N., over tops, in opening of bunchgrass, then downslope through manzanita (yell- awish leaves, no fruit), then low oak brush (never high, mostly leafless), into pines & to some-foo of Varitas, where we camped. This evening, George played back Pigeon and Colts & we soon had two responding, coming close in pines (though after dark). Heard Spotted Owl -- ' far up rocky slope to S., but could not attest closer. (A possible Thick-billed Parrot nesting tree also up the slope; one saw pair at an oak stump & trees in an adjacent area, during daylight.) Found many freshly-eaten cone cores beneath a large white pine low on slope (Seiurer?). In evening heard whip-poor-wills & occasional Poor Will. | Overcast moderately all day, so not unbearably hot. (On June 21, about 95° at Colonia at midday). Camped -about 7500'. Varitas 23 June 1969 Monday. Overcast 9/10 before sunrise, broken up later. Twice saw a Painted Redstart foraging in pine, on timber & branches, about 30' up. | Flushed pair of Harlequin Quail, 100' from streambed in this brush & very short grass. Called -- ' -- ' on ground (whit?) then flew in different direction. | Band-tailed Paragon - 105' above, gray, 2 cm. long, in crop of 2 (av. 4 mm.). Collected an Audubon Warbler (?) Bell Vireo, in medium-sized tree in streambed area. Common was Red-wing Stellar Jay, Flicker, B. Redstart, James Crow, Flycatcher, W. Wood Pewee, along one of waters in stream (200 ± 450). Saw single Townsend's Solitaire, and occasional Band-tailed Paragon in some area. | 1035, departed up canyon to Ojo del Venado, arriving 1100.
