C. Koford 9 Journal 21 June 1969 Arroyo Mesterio, Sierra del Nido, Chihuahua, Mex. shallow water in creek for 200 yds, about 2' wide. Saw Navy Warbler on trunk. I We put up 30'lot net across creek pool below the concrete dam below meadow. Caught 3 larvae with 23 later, which preserved in formalin. I On attack of colona, nest of Barn Swallow with 4 eggs. Mud+grass nest in soften. Two adults + a juvenile Canyon Wren discovered in attic (G.P.). I We drove up canyon to N., leaving 1100. To foot Variter, 1.7 miles. Saw 5+ Cave Flycatchers over streambed, alone, in about 1/2 mile. On just of trail, I saw tracks of a large bear (4"wide), and of a wolf, about 1/4 mile above the water in Vitter bottom, we found dried bodies of wolf & Coyote (Lawday told us of trapping them). Took skulls of both. I flushed pair Harlequin Quail in 2' tall oak brush under pines, near canyon bottom; olives + aspens near. Saw occasional Chukar. Mexican Jays - a group of 8+, including yellow-billed juncos/mile. Saw a yellow Perisna probing among ash leaves & fruits in streamside green tree. I We slowly hiked up Variter canyon toward head, then ascended slope to E. Flushed a large owl - faded brown body with light small spots, & light (whitish) barred tail; sailed across slope (Spotted Owl?). I flushed pair Harlequin Quail in Rd. Mesterio arroyo, area manzanita & dry (brown leaves) near dry tributary, about 1/2 mi. + from water. Shot the F, destroying ovarian, but she had large white placid oviduct, so probably had laid. About 3pm, descending Mesterio, saw Townsend Solitaire perched low in pine forest. We found no water (saw an algae filled bowl) in going downward to fork; then we ascended fork toward Cjo de la Yegua, and soon found pools in bottom. 4pm, Cjo dela Y. - Mex. Jay, Robin, Barn Swallow, juncos on ground (much tramped by cattle), 4 in trough. Deep
