C.Koford 7 Journal Mexico. Rancho Mesteno, Sierra del Nido, Chihuahua 20 June 1969 Numbered Larks in gps. to 30+. At large muddy pond: Kingbird, Blue-billed Lark Sparrow, Acorn Woodpecker, + a few Rockingbirds - grounded in Tree (sahis). Also Killdeer, Violet-green Swallow, 1. Many of smaller willows are leafless, or partly so, a lesser brown, as if from drought. Then W.Bluebilled 6+, Shrike 3, Sparrow Hawk 2, House Wren 2, Two-Scrub Jays, Flickers, before reaching cattle-guard at ranch entrance. Then 2.4 mi. to Mesteno Headquarters (altimeter 6900 + 7200, about 7000). We talked with Baiza, then drove 1.6 mi. up canyon to cross a large pond next to lava-boulder slopes. 2 Diacy Ducks on pond. (We found 2 or 3 single eggs on the shore). Camped at 1800 near pond. Saw 2 Mesteno gos into hole in dead pine, 40' up; 2 others perched in juniper tree (nest?). Hundreds of lava pipers along shore of the pond. We set up mist net near shore and soon took Cptascius, 2 Tadarida, + Myotis (formalin spec.). Heard Poor-will and Whip-poor-will in evening. 21 June 1969. Starting 0530 am. Sounded C. Kergleis choruses. Saw + photo'd; coll. -cok no. 3919 Buff-breasted Flycatcher (G.P. records song + found nest?), fledgling W-B Nuthatch, Chipping Sparrow, Bluebird. Wide-spaced river, same color. Narrowly grazed line, + no fence left. At Nadjtos, Baiza said a bear passed not far away caravaneer of about 4 yrs. ago; possibly lower left. Also told us a trapped wolf's appearance was in Mesteno arrays; taken since last October. We drove down to ranch entrance, thence E. to bottom of Mesteno array (.7 mi. to wood gate, gun gang. 2.6 to Mesteno bottom). Payrol side of fence overgrazed + tatty, but notted & dry. Much mountainized on Mesteno side. Cattle lean, isolated. Saw Bluebird, Jay. Route through sparse oak, pine, juniper, in grassland. At Mesteno bottom, riparian tree, small cliffs- saw Canyon Wren 10-12 Cardinals. At gate delos colotas, on bare bench above streambed, Caver Flycatcher; 10' above ground, in yellow pine.
