Canyon Santa Clara, Sierra del Nido, Chihuahua
oaks, about 6400. Probably Broad-tailed Humble, & White-cars Hummingbirds.
From road, 6.3 mi. close Brevicava, saw a 2 Copper-tailed Trogon fly in
oaks, 100 yds. from cliffs (white skirt band). 6700', Painted Redstart in oak lay
woods. Mexican Jay - a yellow-billed juvenile. Orca. Limber (?) pine on slopes nn.
road. Saw Canyon Wren. A Hummingbird at red flower on acalillo. "Capulin" linden
w. 5 mm. green fruits. Summit 8.5 mi. close Brevicava; alternate road 7100 +
7200', et cattleguas. Beyond, pinon numerous first half mile, then scrubby
oak about 12' high, with Red Jays. Orca. White-breasted Nuthatch. After
3mi., oak about 20' tall & well spread. Ash-throated Flycatcher in are./ at a
reservoir pond, much drawn down (100yds. long, big dam), we saw 3 Barn
Swallows, 5 Violet-green Swallows, 3 C. Kingbirds, 1 B-L. Cambrid, 1 Meadowlark,
Killdeer, Acorn Woodpecker - all at edge pond./ On post grass plain,
when occasional Meadowlark, Sparrow Hawks. After (1 mi., turns N. Over
Mennonite Plain, open oak woodland flat, saw 21 Ravens, milling about)
very high (white-necked?). Then Horned Larks 2, House Sparrows - 20+ on
wires, Lark Sparrow - 30+ on wires. Barn Swallow over pond. Kingbirds,
Raven, Turkey Vulture./ Visited the store. Then an to W. Near a pond, 15+ Horned
Larks, 6 C. Kingbirds, 8 Barn Swallows, 10 House Sparrows. Many more Horned
Larks near Canal de Bevar. / Grass eaten up & better down flat toward
was contrast to last year. Mennonite fields ploughed, or occur. with corn
to 2' high, irregular. Very dusty roads. Obvious drought./ We descended
out into Mestizo canyon & saw, under small oak on grassy hill, 2 Lupine
guillardi. They ran together, showing much white on side toward us as
they zigzagged./ We drove toward Rancho Mestizo. Saw 1 Booming Night-Hawk flying
among oaks, & later 3 more; 2 perched in oak trees Apparently pregnant./ Near
canals, saw chips numerous & grass about 17" where present. In some
areas, view of Lupine about 3' tall, near canals, as if in western Daycotte.
