Sierra del Nido, Chih., trip
Mexico
15 June 1969, p.m. left Berkeley, Calif. for Sierra del Nido.
Departed from Berkeley in MV2 panel truck, for trip of
about 6 weeks, accompanied by Ceb Kofod. Picked up
George Panell, grad student and bird voice recorder,
at Davis. Then on to Saguaro Creek, where we checked
next
squaw lopes and then spent the night.
16 June
Next day drove via S. end of Lake Tahoe and highway 395
down east side of Sierras. Stopped in Death Valley, when
it was raining and some areas flooded. Camped
near Calif.-Ariz. border. Next day pushed on. Visited
Charles Thaler and half Ralph Paitt in Las Cruces, New
Next day
Mexico. Arranged car insurance with AAA in El Paso +
purchased supplies. Then crossed border with no trouble.
But in Juarez was stopped by policemen, for going
too fast through an intersection marked (absurdly) 10 kph,
and had to pay $5 as a "gift" to him. At car club
station at brr. 20, charged $2 openly, for nothing
in particular (no fee required on previous trips; more-
scrips given). Then on south on highway 45, until
east midnight. /woman to be joined by Gene Christman
in Chihuahua City on June 25.
