February 1962 To Delhi
Took train back to Delhi with him, arriving about 8 a.m.
February 1962 Ticket business in Delhi. Malaya arrived from Maidani. Put each group in separate large cage. I departed by plane at 3 p.m. for Bombay, arriving about 5:50 p.m. Then took train at 11:20 p.m. for Poona (24 miles), and arrived 5 a.m.
February 1962 Visited Verna Research Centre at Poona, especially Harold Trapido. We discussed Bonnet macaque & larger work of Japanese group near Dharwar. They have modern new wing in the centre, & modern labroom and other equipment. Trapido said first new M. radista in January of this year. Some langurs in roadside trees near Poona, but we saw none. Many 1- large or cats here; horns tall, often painted or decorated. But little old-India atmosphere in Poona. Trapido drove me around area. Heavily grazed rocky hills with dry grass, now merely brush tufts, of apparently coarse species. Not an attractive area at this time of year. Trees along watercourses but no forests. Took train in eve for Dharwar
February 1961 Train late; arrived about 1430. Met by Kenji Yoshida, youngest of 4-man Japanese Primate Research Group. They had rented an old house about 200 yds. SE of the station. The full staff was Dr. Kawamura (Osaka City Univ.), Suzi-yama (pre-doctoral student, Kyoto Univ.), and Yoshida (pre-master's, same), and Dr. Parthasarthy (Mysore Univ.). All but Yoshida now on a jeep tour to Kerala. The project started in June 1961. Main studies so far were of larger groups in an area several miles W. of Dharwar. Bonnet
