Kofad 33 Journal 20 November 1968. Rancho La Campana, Chih, Mexico and lower canyons below it. Shortly beyond trail was a tributary going W, and we crossed it - steep rapid climb. The larger fork to S had no trail; hence not observed by cardonys (we had seen 2 hearty specimens in canes on way down canyon). At this was the main trail up Campana; we arrived at ranch house 16/10. The trail had been rough; washed out in spots - had to dismount and lead horse; tree fallen over trail, etc. Rare deer tracks during day; fox scat and probably coyote; no sign of bear droppings (its looked for them). Little birdlife - I saw no falconiforms at all My legs (especially lower) sore from 8 hrs ride. In evening shot woodpecker in passy canyon to S of house. Cold, clear, calm evening. 21 November 1968. Light foot, and 1/4 calts. Cumulus 3000. With horses, hiked down canyon just S of house for 2 hrs, then up north canyon S., where he had seen bear about July, 1968. Good spots water in first canyon, though mostly dry. Much dead timber; scarcely a cyprus live, many fallen. Few tracks, few birds. South canyon had more tracks (deer, fox), and at one point on bench under oaks I found old apparent-bear droppings; plant fibers and acorn shells. Upstream not scary of 8+ M. quail, including at least one cd. 07. (Juines said for sure, tho he knew them well). Saw no deer. Back at house 1300. Put up 3 birds + prepared to depart. Left 4 pm and drove down to foot Santa Clara canyon, where camped (about 9 p.m.) 22 November 1968. To Rancho Providencia, Chihuahua Drove to km. 42 (La Parita restaurant), then S. to Ranche Experimental, and drove in. Purpose - info and identification grasses. Was met by Guillermos Valdez (P.O. Box 682, Tel. 25635, Bolivar 1000, office no. 4, Chih.), in 20's, who spoke English and had spent a month at Denver Wildlife Research Center (USFWS). He said common grasses: Bouteloua gracilis, hirsuta, scitipendula (dura),
