19 November 1968.
Rancho La Campana, Chih., Mexico
Arrived ranch house (2 stone shower, occasional breeze heater & propane
stove) about 1315. Chavez soon came by horse; said he left
Hermosus at 0900 and that trail was fairly direct up N. fork of C. La
Campana. I walked up & down steep sided canyon just 5/8 of
mile. A 100 meter pond at pressure, & water for a few hundred yds. below.
Otherwise dry canyons. Cattle browsing & grazing of bunchgrass
leaves, but all cattle gone (to Hermosus). They graze here only
July to October; then trail to Hermosus, & seldom from there. Vegetation
is small oaks (15'), oak brush, penigar, leucba & other pines,
rocks, bunchgrass. Much drier than Mesteros canyon, but few
number birds - Stellard Mexican jays, junco, towhee, canyon
wrens, fleders, hairy woodpecker, ny-la-zap-sucker. Ele. 7400' below.
20 November 1968. Clear & calm night; no frost. With Drines, went by foot via
N.E. to ruin of C. Campana, down a rough tributary for a bit to an ojoite, where
there was clear year-round running water and 15-20' long pools. I said
this only ojo in canyon; he saw been seen last April (approx.), but
more severe. Camp burned by lightning fire about 4 yrs ago. Small
oaks, few pines, oak brush, bunchgrass - but mostly red rock cliffs,
lycuries, and substrate. Another hour downstream brought us to main fork,
where much horse sign, remnants old wood, and larger oaks in bottom.
Red cliffs about 1000' high some areas. Plain clearly visible a few miles to
E.; Drines said about 1 1/2 hrs. from there to Hermosus house. We went a few
hundred yards up fork to S., and visited Cueva de los Apaches. This
was about 145' long, 60' deep, and 15' high, and lay at foot of cliffs
near wash. Ceiling & walls black, as with smoke, but have a few
dozen Indian paintings, perhaps made with mud or finger. Some
vertebrates represented as well as men and abstract designs. First trying
